THE PEDAGOGY OF SOCIAL MEDIA COMIC IN INDONESIA
Abstract
Comic creator in Japan is basically an informal job (Sabin, 1996). The formal education of comics actually started in Europe and grew up in America, adapted by art education in Indonesia in teaching sequential art. Comics on social media, which are currently growing rapidly in Indonesia, have different strategies, goals, and production methods from printed comics. Comics on social media are mostly made by people from various professions and non-art education backgrounds. Assuming that the trend of digital comics on social media will only continue to grow rapidly, it means that a paradigm shift in art education is needed in teaching sequential art. Social media comics are proven to have the same potential to be popular than conventional comic artists, carry out their profession within the framework of a businessman, have entrepreneurial aspects, and are more agile in developing their comics through IP monetization and transmedia. This study investigates the learning model of comic artists on social media in producing comics with an explanatory investigative approach, equipped with qualitative data from expert interviews. Theoretically, this research has the benefit of explaining the current landscape of the comic industry in Indonesia, especially comics on social media and ultimately being a reference for developing and modifying the pedagogy of teaching comics in art schools or universities.
